BFT Access Control Installation: The Bedford Owner’s Guide

BFT access control installation in Bedford typically runs $450 to $1,400 installed, depending on whether we’re integrating a keypad, card reader, or phone-based entry system with your existing BFT operator. We stock BFT-compatible keypads, receivers, and control boards on the truck, and most single-reader installations are completed same-day once we’re on site. The way most Bedford homeowners discover a failed access control part is simple: the gate stops responding to the remote, the keypad goes dark, or the gate opens fine manually but won’t trigger from the street side.

That last one is the tell. When a BFT gate works from the inside button but not the outside keypad or remote, the problem is almost never the motor. It’s the access control layer, and that’s a separate repair entirely.

Which BFT Models This Applies To

We install and wire access control for the BFT operator families that show up most often on Bedford driveways: the Deimos, Phobos, and Rigel swing-arm lines, plus the Aries and Icaro sliding-gate series. If your operator was installed before 2015, there’s a decent chance it’s a Deimos BT or a Phobos N, both of which use a 24V control board with dedicated terminals for a keypad or card reader. Newer BFT units moved to the U-Link platform, which changes the plug-and-play options considerably.

The compatibility gotcha nobody tells you: a BFT keypad wired for a U-Link board will not power up cleanly on an older Deimos without a separate 24V relay, even though the connector looks close enough to tempt you. We’ve corrected that exact wiring mistake on three Bedford gates this year. If you’re sourcing a part yourself, check the board’s label inside the operator housing. Older boards say “Deimos BT A20” or similar. Newer ones have a QR code and “U-Link” printed on the silkscreen. That label is the difference between plug-and-play and a fried keypad.

On OEM versus aftermarket: BFT’s own keypads and readers are solid, but they’re priced at a premium and sometimes backordered. We install both OEM BFT parts and quality equivalents like the FAAC-compatible receivers that share the same 433.92 MHz frequency. For most Bedford residential gates, a good aftermarket keypad at half the OEM price does the same job and lasts just as long in Texas heat. We’ll show you both prices in writing, and you choose.

Signs Your BFT Access Control Installation Is Failing

Signs Your BFT Access Control Installation Is Failing
  • Keypad lights up but won’t trigger the gate. The keypad’s internal relay has worn out, or the code memory cleared itself. We see this on keypads more than six years old in Bedford’s summer heat cycles. The keypad looks alive, but it’s not actually sending a signal.
  • Remote works close up but not from the street. The receiver antenna inside the operator box has corroded or pulled loose from its terminal. BFT receivers are sensitive to antenna placement, and humidity inside the housing accelerates the corrosion. A new antenna wire fixes this in fifteen minutes.
  • Gate opens on its own at random intervals. This is almost always a failing receiver board picking up stray RF from a neighboring opener on the same frequency. It’s also a security issue worth fixing promptly. A receiver with rolling-code encryption eliminates it.
  • Call box or intercom works but the gate won’t respond from the house. The control board’s relay output for the access control circuit has failed. The board still runs the motor, but the command from the keypad never reaches it. We test this with a meter before recommending anything.
  • You hear a click but no movement when using the keypad. The relay fires, so the keypad and board are fine. The problem is downstream, often a corroded wire nut or a broken conductor inside the conduit. We trace it with a tone generator and fix the one bad splice instead of re-pulling the whole run.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Bedford, a single BFT-compatible keypad installation runs $450 to $650, including the part, wiring to the operator, programming the codes, and testing the full open-close cycle. A card reader or phone-based entry system adds complexity and typically lands between $900 and $1,400, depending on whether we’re adding a new receiver, a cellular module, or running conduit across a driveway.

Here’s the line-item breakdown so the price makes sense:

  • BFT-compatible keypad (weatherproof, backlit): $180 to $320
  • Receiver module or control board replacement: $150 to $400
  • Labor (installation, programming, testing): $180 to $350
  • Conduit or wire, if a new run is needed: $60 to $160

Every quote is written before we start, per Haven Standard Clause 1. You’ll see the part number, the labor line, and the total before any tool comes off the truck. The work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise, so if the keypad fails or the programming drops within a year, we return and make it right at no charge.

DIY or Call Us?

Access control work on a BFT gate involves low-voltage wiring at the board level, and while 24V won’t hurt you the way line voltage will, a shorted wire or a miswired relay can destroy a $400 control board in one careless second. We’ve seen Bedford homeowners turn a $180 keypad replacement into an $800 board swap because a wire touched where it shouldn’t have. If you’re swapping a hand-held remote or re-entering a keypad code, that’s owner-level work. If you’re touching the board terminals or running new wire, call us.

One thing you can safely do before calling: open the operator housing, photograph the board and any labels, and note whether the keypad is wired to the “COM” and “OPEN” terminals or a dedicated accessory port. That photograph saves one diagnostic step when we arrive. Then call (817) 572-8590 and tell us what you found. We’ll have the right part on the truck when we pull up.
