Linear Keypad & Intercom Repair: The Bedford Owner’s Guide

Linear keypad and intercom repair in Bedford typically runs between $185 and $420 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing the keypad face, the intercom module, or both. Most Bedford calls are same-day when we have the part on the truck, which is most of the time for the common Linear series. You’ll usually notice it first as a keypad that looks fine but won’t take your code, or an intercom that buzzes but won’t carry your voice.

The failure picture is consistent: a homeowner stands at the gate pressing buttons, the unit beeps or doesn’t, and the gate does nothing. Or the visitor station hums but no one inside can hear who’s out there. By the time someone calls us, they’ve usually reset their code twice, replaced the battery in their remote, and stood in the rain once too often. The actual fix is usually simpler than the frustration that led to it.

We’re an independent service provider in Bedford, not affiliated with Linear. We stock Linear-compatible parts because they fail predictably and we’d rather have the fix on hand than make you wait on a shipment.

Which Linear Models This Applies To

Linear’s keypad and intercom lineup breaks into a few families, and each has its own failure pattern. The APeX series (AP-5, AP-3) is the most common residential keypad we see on Bedford gates, followed by the older IEI 212i and 232i models that Linear acquired. The AE series covers intercom modules, and the AM-KP covers the combo units. If your keypad is a single-gang metal faceplate with a blue or green backlight, you’re almost certainly looking at an APeX or IEI-era design.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha most Bedford owners run into: the AP-5 and AP-2 look nearly identical from arm’s length, but the AP-5 is a 5-wire unit and the AP-2 is a 2-wire unit. Swap them blindly and the keypad either won’t power up or won’t trigger the gate controller. We check the wire count before we touch anything. The model number is usually printed on a label inside the keypad housing or on the back of the faceplate.

OEM Linear parts are what we install by default. Aftermarket equivalents exist for the basic keypad bodies, but we’ve seen enough flaky relay boards in cheap clones that we won’t put one on a gate and stand behind it for a year. If an OEM part is discontinued, we’ll tell you that up front and discuss the aftermarket option with its limitations named plainly.

Signs Your Linear Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing

Signs Your Linear Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing
  • Code accepted, no gate movement. The keypad’s internal relay clicks or beeps, but the gate controller never receives the open command. Usually a failed relay or a broken wire between the keypad and the controller. We test continuity at both ends before condemning anything.
  • Keypad lights up but won’t register button presses. The membrane or tactile switches under the buttons have worn out. Bedford’s spring pollen and summer dust work into the keypad edges and accelerate this. A new faceplate is the standard fix.
  • Intercom audio is one-way. You can hear the visitor, they can’t hear you, or the reverse. Usually a failed speaker or microphone element in the intercom module. Occasionally it’s a wiring issue at the controller, but the module is the usual suspect.
  • Water inside the housing. Linear keypads are weather-rated but the gaskets degrade after five or six Texas summers. Once water gets past the seal, the board corrodes and intermittent failures start. If you can see condensation behind the faceplate, it’s already failing.
  • Code resets to factory default on its own. This points to a failing memory component or a power supply that’s sagging. If your code works for a week and then stops, and you have to reprogram it repeatedly, the keypad’s board is on its way out.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A Linear keypad replacement in Bedford lands between $185 and $320 installed for most residential models. Intercom module replacement runs $220 to $420 depending on whether we’re doing the visitor station only or both the indoor and outdoor units. If both the keypad and intercom are dead, expect the combined job to fall in the $350 to $550 range. We hand you a written price before any work starts, and that’s the price you pay unless we find something structural that changes the scope and you approve it first.

Every job includes the part, the labor, wiring verification back to the gate controller, reprogramming your existing codes if you want them kept, and a photo log of what we found and what we left behind. That photo record is yours to keep and it’s filed in our job record too. If the new part fails within a year, the 365-Day Done Right Promise covers it at no charge.

A note on the range: some Bedford gates were built with older IEI keypads that Linear discontinued. Those sometimes require a retrofit plate and a small wiring adapter. We’ll show you the difference before we order anything, and the written quote covers it either way.

DIY or Call Us?

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check a few things before you call us: verify the keypad has power by checking if the backlight comes on, try a known-good code, and check that the wires at the keypad aren’t visibly pulled loose. That’s about where safe DIY ends for most Bedford homeowners. The moment you’re opening a keypad housing with live low-voltage wires and a relay board inside, you’re one wrong connection away from taking the gate controller down with it.

A miswired keypad can also leave the gate itself in an undefined state, which is a safety issue if you have young kids or pets in the yard. We’ve repaired enough DIY attempts where a homeowner crossed the wrong two wires and the gate started opening every time the phone rang. That’s a true story from a call off Harwood Road. If you’re not sure, call (817) 572-8590 and we’ll walk you through a quick check over the phone before we dispatch anyone.
